In response to the recent eruption of violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories, a demonstration was organised in Falmouth on Sunday afternoon (16 May) to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

Protests have occurred across the country over the last week, with over 100,000 people turning out for a protest in London.

On the event’s Facebook group, organisers urged the “people in Cornwall to join us to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine… At least 122 people have been killed in Gaza, including 27 children since Israel started bombarding the region five days ago.”

On Sunday, a group of around 30-40 mobilised at the Moor, largely masked and socially distanced. There were speeches from organisers urging immediate action.

“Write to your MP, fund charities that support Palestine… we’ve sat aside for decades and decades”.

A particularly emotive speech was made by a Palestinian professor at the University of Exeter.

“We are originally from Jerusalem.”

“My grandfather left for Hebron because of violence committed but the house is still there and occupied by complete strangers.”

“We will not be silent anymore.”

The Anchor was also in conversation with Jennifer Forbes at the protest, former Labour parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth, who said: “We have a moral obligation to stand up for the oppressed whether in this country or abroad… Labour in particular should take a very strong position.”

Sunday marked the deadliest day of this week-long conflict, with two Israeli airstrikes killing at least 43 Palestinians, including 8 children, and injuring 50 others, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. With that, the death toll climbs to 197, including at least 58 children and 34 women. 10 Israelis have also been killed by rockets fired from Gaza, according to the Israel Defence Forces.
