Flying start for FX Union with first win of new season

Last Sunday saw FX Union open this season’s account with a well-earned 4-2 victory against Tregony, despite some less than ideal conditions.

Following on from a productive first training session which introduced several promising new players into the squad, FXU went into their first fixture with a heightened appetite for victory. Whilst the weather sought to put a very literal dampener on the game, the attitude of the Union team remained charged with eager optimism.

The initial quarter of the game saw FXU having the lion’s share of possession and chances, with efforts from Captain Issac Aldridge and Michael Hinkin mounting early pressure on the Tregony defence.  Yet despite continued attacks the game remained scoreless as the half wore on, and a blow came for Union with the injury of central midfield engine Melchior Du Cluzeau.

After the stoppage, the run of play began to shift against FXU, as a sudden counter attack resulted in Tregony putting themselves a goal ahead. But in an almost immediate response from Union, a well worked passage of play resulted in an equalizing goal from Charlie Pugh.

However, in the typical excitement of the Cornish Sunday league, a bursting run from Tregony caught the FXU defence off guard and saw them concede a second goal.

A rousing half time speech from President Harry Poole injected the Union players with a renewed vigour, and the second half saw the boys in white take to the field determined to take back the win. The desire was clearly visible as FXU took the game to Tregony, with repeated offensives coming closer and closer.

Relief finally came after a sizzling attack down the left hand side resulted in Union winger Jack Holman netting his first goal of the season. With wind in their sails, a series of well-played passes combined with excellent supporting runs resulted in FXU taking the lead and Holman securing a second goal.

With Union in the driving seat, they began to open the limited width of Dracaena’s narrow top pitch and display a taster of the relaxed professionalism which is sure to characterise the team’s football this season. To put the icing on the cake, a spectacular moment of attacking pressure from Pugh granted him a clear chance to bag his second goal which he coolly took.

With a final score line of 4-2, Union have made a flying start to their new season, and will be hoping to replicate the success of last season which saw the team secure two pieces of silverware for the FXU trophy cabinet. Time will tell if this year will be as lucrative for Union as last, and this Sunday’s fixture against Falmouth Athletico will be another step towards that.
