Weekly Sports Round-Up (March 20th – 26th)

FXU sports clubs ended the term in fine form with great results from the Falmouth Falcons Quidditch team, CSM Badminton and FXU Athletics Club

Recent Results:

Tremough Quidditch Club

Kicking off the round-up are the Falmouth Falcons Quidditch team, who traveled to Exeter to compete in the South West League and pulled off some great results.

In their first match, the Falcons ran rampant against Bath with a dominating display that resulted in a 210*-40 win to begin the day.

The second and last competitive match of the season saw the Falcons face old rivals, Exeter. It would be a short one, however, as ‘Seeker’ Reuben Thompson caught the snitch within record time to seal a 50*-40 win.

The results see the Falmouth Falcons finish second in the South West League only behind the Brizzlebears, the runners-up at this year’s British Quidditch Cup. Congratulations to the Falcons!

CSM Badminton

In Badminton, the CSM Mixed Team (Matt Littleales / Amy Cox, Alex Shaw / YinLing Tan, Nic Batten / Alexandria Bell) ended the season in style with an 8-1 win against Mounts Bay A.

All three pairs faced county players and matched them for quality. Both Alex & YinLing and Nic & Alexandria won all three of their games, while Matt & Amy dropped just one set against the top seeded player.

FXU Athletics Club

Members from the FXU Athletics Club represented Cornwall in the Westward League Cross Country over the weekend.

In the Men’s 8.1km, Captain Jordan Clay finished in 6th with a time of 29 minutes and 25 seconds, putting him in 5th in the league of 307 athletes.

Following closely behind in 13th was Tom Newman, who finished the race in 31.02. This sees a massive improvement from 84th in Plymouth and awards him with a rank in the top 25 for the season.

Both Nathan Elemen and Kallum Wright finished strongly with times of 34.34 and 37.22 respectively. They placed 43rd and 62nd on Saturday, with Kallum just missing out on a top 50 place overall, ranking 51st.

In the Women’s 4.9km, Sophie Lloyd ran well finishing 21st with a time of 22.24.

Other Results:

In football, Camborne School of Mines beat Penryn 2-1 in their Saturday League.

The long-awaited Sunday League decider between Tremough FC and FXUnion was spoiled by a lack of referee yesterday. Regardless, the teams played a friendly which saw Tremough defeat FXU 3-0.

CSM Rugby played in the Barrel Match over the weekend and were victorious with a 19-12 win. They also played in the league, winning 41-21 against Voer.

In Hockey, the CSM Ladies team finished the term with an impressive 8-0 victory.

Finally, FXU Volleyball entered the Cornish Beach Volleyball competition and performed remarkably well for their first real beach volleyball experience. Michael Legros and James Collins got through to the final pool, while Olly Smith and James Mosely narrowly lost in the final to an ex-professional and a coach but still came away with the prize money!

Non-competitive events:

On Saturday, FXU Dodgeball held a charity dodgeball tournament in aid of Comic Relief and raised £108.85!

The tournament, which saw seven teams competing, was won by Chaos Defrost (pictured). Runners-up were Kicka$$ Panda$ and Tridents took the bronze medal.

India Durban (Social Sec and Treasurer) said: ‘The event was hugely successful; with over £100 raised for Comic Relief. People new to dodgeball got involved in the sport and are now wanting to join the society. It was a day where everyone enjoyed themselves and played some great dodgeball!’
