This week saw strong performances by many sports clubs, with FXU Athletics Club and Tremough Quidditch Club particularly standing out in the week’s events.
FXU Athletics Club & FXRun
Hundreds of runners took part in the annual Falmouth Half-Marathon this weekend. Three members of the FXU Athletics Club participated in the 13 mile run with Joe Argall finishing 11th with a time of 1:22.22, whilst Nathan Elemen came 39th with a time of 1:29.50 and Kallum Wright finished 52nd with 1:33.00.
Members of FXRun also took part in the annual event; Matt Mason placed 139th with a time of 1:43:47, Chris Thurston came 252nd with a time of 1:54:28, Nathan Field placed 369th with a time of 2:04:37 and Abi Clarke finished 522nd with a time of 2:26:25.
In further success for FXU Athletics Club, the Cross Country Captain, Jordan Clay, was selected to represent Cornwall in Loughborough for the Cross-Country Inter-Counties Championships held this weekend. Clay ran 12,000m in the Senior Men Category and finished with a time of 42:56 and placed 123rd/283.
It was a successful weekend for football this week with CSM Football Club beating the Pendeen Rovers away in the Percy Stephens Cup 5-2 with a brace from Joe Privett and Josh Oldridge and one goal from Toby Purvis securing the win.
Sunday League Football
Tremough FC also saw success with the team beating FXUnion 3-2 on Sunday morning.
Rugby saw less success this weekend with CSM playing Helston at home, losing 0-17.
CSM Men’s Hockey was in action against this weekend, beating Duchy, the current holders of the County Hockey Cup, 3-2 last Wednesday in the Semi-Finals of this year’s competition. Following their win, the team are set to play Bodmin in the finals on the 8th April.
Tremough Quidditch Club
The Falmouth Falcons, went to their third British Quidditch Cup (BQC) this weekend and played across both Saturday and Sunday in Rugeley, Staffordshire.
The group stages on Saturday proved tough for the team as they lost all three of the games, landing them in the lower bracket for the next day. However, they came back with renewed vigour on Sunday and, despite losing a few players to injury, they won all three games against teams they had never played previously. The three victories placed the team in the final where they came up against the HogYork Horntails who they had faced the previous day and lost to by 10 hoops (100 points). However, the Falmouth Falcons managed to take a heavy lead against them and finished the match by catching the snitch, finishing the game with 90* and York with 40. The Falmouth Falcons thus won the lower bracket of the BQC and secured a plate to commemorate the win!
The FXU Tridents American Football team played against a battle-hardened Bath Spa this week in a friendly match, losing 26-0. The team, mostly made up of Freshers, played really well throughout the game with the score line not reflecting how close the game actually was, with Bath’s competitive experience being the deciding factor between the two sides.
FXU Volleyball Men’s team narrowly lost against Bristol this weekend after three sets, scoring 4:25, 17:25 and 23:25 respectively.
