The gym that £4m built

Victoria Williams reports on the new Sports Centre on the Penryn Campus

More time, support, variety, equipment, offers and sports – this is what the newly opened Penryn Campus Sports Centre is offering compared to its predecessor. With a large four court sports hall, 90-station gym, studio and floodlit outdoor games area it’s certainly an impressive sight. Since its doors opened on the 26th September, the new facilities have been used by many students, staff members and members of the local community, all of whom can enjoy special membership packages.

The new gym boasts modern cardio, free weights and resistance equipment and the friendly, knowledgeable team are available to help or answer questions. Perry Wyatt, a student at the Penryn Campus said “The original gym was much more compact and this new build has much more equipment and is more suited to accommodate more people. The facilities there are excellent”, and another customer had this to say: “It’s a beautiful space, clean light and airy. The range of new equipment is amazing. All the staff are so friendly and supportive, they can’t do enough to help with any questions. This is a place for everyone – from those new to exercise who want to try the odd class to those dedicated to fitness and weight training”.

The spacious studio is home to a range of exercise classes – ranging from yoga to the intense half-hour Les Mills Grit sessions – led by enthusiastic instructors who encourage everyone to work hard and have fun whatever their fitness level. I myself have already spent a couple of happy hours there sweating madly and trying not to fall over in classes with other students, local residents, and even one of my lecturers.

The sports hall and games area have been welcomed by the multitude of FXU sport societies; FXU President for Student Experience, Amanda Chetwynd-Cowieson, said “Having a sports hall on campus is of huge benefit to the FXU clubs meaning they can now train more often whilst also saving time and money on travel. I’m so excited to see how many more sporting events will be held in this new facility and highly encourage all students to go and have a look around!” and Hannah Davies, Second Team Vice Captain of the netball society said “The new sports centre provides sports teams with a professional looking venue to host matches in as well as a fully equipped gym for everyone to work on their fitness. Having all of this under one roof makes training so much easier as you don’t have to travel between venues if you wish to go to the gym before training”.

The team at the sports centre, aside from all being lovely and helpful, seem proud of their new facilities. Head of Sport and Recreation at Falmouth Exeter Plus, Simon Court, said, “We’re excited to open the doors on this fantastic new facility for the Penryn Campus and the local area. Offering so much more than our former Fitness Centre – a larger gym, a broader range of classes and activities, expertise and advice on hand at all times from our team of fitness professionals, and a range of flexible membership options – we have something to suit all lifestyles and fitness goals.”

So if you’re already a dedicated squatter or weight trainer, you know where to head. If you’re new to the world of sport and exercise, don’t be intimidated by the huge building – inside you’ll find everything you need to get fit, lose weight or just relieve your stress and take some time for yourself.
