The build-up to Christmas usually means a cooling off period for university sports, with members hopping off home to every corner of the world for the festive season – but not for volleyball!

Kernow Truro played against Plymouth Mayflower last Saturday at Truro Leisure Centre. Three members of the FXU team competed as part of the Kernow Truro team; Olly Smith, Shaun Hicks and Johnathan Holburn. Amongst them was Olly Smith, Fresher, who has never played volleyball competitively, before joining the FXU society in September. The team played very well and narrowly lost three sets, scoring 21-25, 16-25 and 21-25.

The FXU Volleyball society is one of the most active sports teams on campus with two training sessions a week, numerous social events, matches and even the odd trip! Earlier this term the society headed off to St Ives for a day of beach volleyball, sunbathing and BBQs along with regular trips to Gylly! The society is currently planning a trip to the beautiful Canary Island of Fuerteventura next Easter with the hope of playing volleyball on the beach in front of the hotel, following the success of last year’s trip to Barcelona.

With such a busy calendar from January there’s never been a better time to finally complete that all-important New Year’s resolution and try a new sport! Check out their Facebook page here and in the words of their President, ‘Peace, Love and Volleyballs’.
