British Universities and College Sports held their annual surf competition in Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall this year, in which our local team did not disappoint.
With over 360 competitors from all over the UK, university teams all had a go at an average day of surf with a nice, but weak swell over the weekend.
Day one started early at 8:30am, with the best waves of the day. Some nice waves were surfed, however throughout the rest of day it dropped off quite a lot. Nevertheless, it was a fun and competitive day, with 54 heats in the men’s and 21 heats in the women’s.
We had much success, with student Gabi Rowe winning 1st place for the women’s and Matt Chapman taking 1st in the mens event, which he took from last years winner Swansea’s Rhys Poulton. The Ladies Team were then awarded first place in the Women’s Team running, with the men just losing out to Plymouth for the top spot in the men’s team standings.
Because of Falmouth’s overall success in which they recieved, three 1st places and one 2nd place, Falmouth were once again crowned the Top University Club.
Despite the average surf conditions on the weekend, there was still a great atmosphere on the beach with good chat between the competitors and the fabulous location of Fistral beach as a great backdrop to what was a great weekend.
