The win sees FXU extend their winning run to two games, only days after defeating Cardiff University on Wednesday in a tense final set to decide the first match of the season.

The team’s second outing was a comparatively straight-forward affair as FXU dispatched the Bournemouth side in the fourth set in comprehensive fashion, but only after recovering from a slow start which saw FXU lose the first set.

FXU began the match tentatively, with a few mistakes allowing BU to take an early lead, yet the home team managed to settle midway through the opening set with a great rally and spike from Captain Olly Smith making the scores 16-13 in favour of FXU. It seemed that momentum would carry FXU further forward, but a string of communication errors allowed Bournemouth to level the scores at 19-19 before securing the first set 25-23.

Despite the early set back, FXU turned the tide around with two dominating displays in the second and third sets. Some good blocking from Tom Heath saw FXU storm ahead of Bournemouth by 14-7 in the second set, followed by a highlight-worthy Jake Timms spike extending the gap to nine points as FXU secured the set 25-16.

The third set saw FXU really get into their stride with accurate placement shots from Luke Asquith, blocks from Mike Legros and Michael Quan and an ace from Olly Smith, propelling FXU 13 points ahead of Bournemouth in the set, which ended 25-12 to the unrelenting home side.

Indeed, the victory was confirmed in the fourth and final set as FXU capitalised on a tiring Bournemouth team, whose misplaced serves led them ever closer to defeat. FXU’s win was finally secured by yet another explosive spike from Smith, with the last set finishing 25-14 and concluding the match.

FXU’s number seven Jake Timms spoke to the Anchor after the match and said that the team ‘really picked it up’ after the slow start and that overall he ‘couldn’t have asked for better’ by the end. This view will certainly have been shared with the rest of the team after Saturday’s performance, which takes FXU to two wins out of two and continues their perfect start to the season.
