CSM Football

Report by Josh Oldridge:

Mawnan 4 – 1 CSM FC (03/02/18)

Despite the referee deeming the pitch to be in an acceptable condition, there wasn’t too much in the way of flowing football at Carwinion on Saturday given that the surface at full-time resembled a piece of heavily used agricultural land. But CSM’s first game back since the Christmas break, after a waterlogged January, did go ahead, and started explosively with three goals in the first 15 minutes. Mawnan were awarded a penalty soon after kick-off when their striker received a slight nudge in the back in the box. They duly slotted home, but the celebrations had barely stopped when CSM top-scorer Ethan Nichols turned smartly and fired home from the edge of the area, catching the keeper out at his near post, to quickly level the score.

But the pitch was already falling into disrepair. A mistake at the back led to a second for Mawnan before a hailstorm of biblical proportions swept in sideways, leaving the players happy to just get off the pitch for half-time drinks. CSM gave it everything in the second half, but on a virtually unplayable pitch, Mawnan managed two more goals – one from a corner and the other from an unfortunate misdirected header from a CSM player in the midfield. A tough match to lose against championship rivals, but there was no shame on behalf of the CSM players – they gave it their all!
