From the 15th to the 18th of February, the FXU Athletics club has participated in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Indoor Championships, in Sheffield. As last year, the stage of the competition was the ESI (English sport institute) indoor track.
The team was composed by 7 athletes (3 females and 4 males): Laura Armorgie (high jump), Lily England (400 metres), Megan Bailey (pole vault), Charlie Maw (pole vault), Giuliano Formisano (800 metres), Jamal Clarke (400 metres) and Jordan Clay (3,000 metres).
The best results came from the field events, captained by Bailey. FXU managed to win its first BUCS medal thanks to Laura Armorgie (silver medalist) with a great 1.70m in the high jump final. Outstanding results for Bailey (3.60 metres) and Maw (4.40 metres), who finished both in the top 10 in the pole vault competition. On the track, Formisano set his new PB in the 800m (2’06’’.75); England set her new SB in the 400m (1’06’’.54); Clay, after achieving a fantastic 44th position at the BUCS cross country race, completed the 3,000 metres in 8’58’’.77; unfortunately, Clarke got disqualified on the 400m, although showing great potential for the oncoming varsity and BUCS outdoor Championships next spring.
Overall, the team was very happy to represent FXU at BUCS for the second year and hopes to continue this great season (1st place at the South-West varsity, last October) in the next competitions. FXU Athletics is now preparing the spring South-West varsity and the outdoor BUCS competitions, where all the energies will be needed to keep consolidating FXU establishment in the athletics scene.
