The Falmouth Anchor presents a brand new feature as we follow the competitive journeys of our university’s various sports clubs. Join the Sports Hub to get involved on Facebook and help us produce more sports coverage as we aim to recognise and celebrate the sporting talent at Falmouth and Exeter.
We kick off the round-up with two positive results from the two campus Sunday League football teams. Goals from Dan Wilcox and Jack Holman saw FX Union come out 2-1 winners against Bodmin-based namesake Union in their first fixture since November. Read Harry Jacobs‘ report on a hard-fought victory for FXU as they climb the Cornwall Sunday League Group B table.
It was a similar story for Group B rivals, Tremough FC, as they secured a comfortable 4-1 win away to Shortlanesend.
FXU’s Men’s Hockey team had a very successful weekend with victories in both the league and cup competitions. On Saturday, the squad beat West Dorset 4-1 in the league and then on Sunday, defeated Truro on penalties in the quarter-final of the cup, after a tense 4-4 draw in normal time.
In Badminton, the CSM Mixed Team achieved their first win of the season against Tecans B Mixed Team with a 6-3 win. The team, made up of Amy Cox, Matt Littleales, YinLing Tan, Alex Shaw, Alexandria Bell and Nic Batten, showed great character to defeat the opposition, after losing to Tecans 5-4 earlier in the season. Special mention goes to YinLing Tan and Alex Shaw, who, in their first match together, won two out of their three games.
Finally, the Expedition Society tasted success in the orienteering competition in Poldice last Sunday. The tournament, which tests how fast competitors can navigate a set route, saw Christophe Patterson finish fasted out of sixteen on the Green course, while Rowan Hawkes and Lucy Wells placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the Light Green category. Megan Godley, Hannah Ritchie, Oli Rant, Joe Robinson, Catherine Walker and Axel Curlsson all navigated to the end of their respective routes, which was a great result seeing as it was many of the society’s members’ first ever orienteering event.
Upcoming Fixtures and Events:
The biggest weekend in CSM sport is nearly upon us as we travel to London on Friday for the annual Bottle Match against the Royal School of Mines. CSM are looking to retain the Bottle following last year’s victory and will be competing in a variety of sports over the course of the weekend.
Alongside Rugby, the Badminton, Tennis, Squash, Netball, Golf, Lacrosse, Men’s Hockey, Ladies Hockey and Football teams will all be looking for a great performance to ensure that we keep the Bottle for another year. Be sure to follow the Falmouth Anchor to keep updated on the weekend’s results.
Elsewhere, the FXU Athletics club will be competing in the BUCS Nationals in Sheffield this weekend, while Ultimate Frisbee will travel to Bristol to play against other universities in their BUCS league.
Many thanks to the CSM/FXU sports clubs for helping produce this round-up. We plan to continue this content each week, so stay posted and don’t forget to join the Sports Hub on Facebook if you want us to cover your university sports club!
